 -  You could get donations from your users. Many wordpress plugins, open source tools and Wikipedia do this. This could be the future of newspapers.

 Gillette model 

- Printers and razors are sold less than cost, as they plan to make high margin from selling a complementary product (cartridge/blades). The printer or blade you purchased will turn worthless if you don't buy the super-high margin complementary products from the manufacturer. On the web, for instance, you could create a cloud based spreadhseet/wordprocessr that is free to edit/create documents, but charged money for exporting it as a file to the local machine. Or you could charge high for the iPhone app that can access the data natively.

Open Source Model 

- Sell the product for free and plan to make money on support, customization and installation. Most open source software follow this model.

Usage charge model 

- This is related to the freemium model. Give the product free for low usage, but charge when the user is exceeding the free limits (many storage applications such as Dropbox fall under this).

 - Sell products through in-app purchases or to get forward in the game.

 Credit card model 

- In this model, you make your product free for one side (consumers) and use the network effects to make the other side (merchants) pay. Facebook, Yelp and other online marketplaces are now getting on to the model.


- Sell a free product & use that to promote a premium product in the same segment. For instance, If you run a finance website, you could give stock quotes free and sell premium analyst reports and financial planning tools.

 Build a brand 

- Use the free service to get brownie points/good press and use the brand image to sell premium products (directly related or not) later.

 Affiliate marketing 

- Signup for affiliate programs related to your service and convert your users to customers of your affiliates.

 Sell it to Google 

- Build a big user base that might attract a big buyer such as Microsoft or Google, who might use the user base to sell their premium products/services.

 Make your next venture a success

 - If none of the previous stuff works, you could run a free venture to build your personal brand/get popular and hope to get funding for your next venture.

Solve your own pain

You can try to design a better solution to that problem and make that your startup idea.

    For Expansion

    Flipkart wants to expand to fashion and lifestyle market. Myntra already occupies almost 30% of fashion and lifestyle markets. Now to expand further it needs more finance. Myntra also wants to enter market-space for garments industry.


    With big players like Amazon who have large financial and technological capacity and experience from other markets the growing competition will become even tougher and it could take customers from both Flipkart and Myntra.
    Further,Amazon is not the only competition Flipkart is guarding itself against. Even the largest retailer of the world, US-based Walmart, is planning to launch online services soon, starting with its cash and carry or wholesale business. Another American e-commerce giant, eBay, is already operating in India. Then, there are others such as home-grown Snapdeal, present across 500-odd categories and 100,000 sellers.


    Macro Economic Factors

    With Modi becoming PM; more international players could come which will further increase the competition. Although It was said earlier that he wants to allow foreign investment in defense projects, but not in e-commerce- retail. But It could be forecasted that his government will give more opportunities for economic growth, and in fact he wants to give more opportunities for multi brands, which could further increase competition.

    E-commerce players offer huge discounts and attractive offers to lure people to shop online. However, since Indian consumer looks for the lowest price before making a purchase, the cost of customer acquisition is high for these companies. Moreover, since a large number of players offer the same products at the same prices, switching cost is non-existent. Consequently, a customer’s lifetime value is low. This poses a challenge for players in their effort to develop sound strategies to attract and generate repeat customers.
    Hence, a merge can provide customer sharing for both which will give larger customer base.


    When e-commerce-retail came in India it was already tried and tested in other countries. Hence VC loved to invest in it.Tiger Global Management, Accel Partners and Sofina Capital invested in both Myntra and Flipkart. But VC saw aggressive moves by Amazon.com Inc.’s India unit to carve out a larger market share in the country, they asked both companies to merge to stay as more stable unit. Further VC are seeing risks with changed government as new government might simply allow FDI in multi-brand e-commerce which would open the Amazon, WalMart, and Target floodgates. So the VCs seem to have asked them to unite.

    Hence this acquisition could give more market share, cut costs, boost productivity and improve investment returns through scale economies. Hence it is beneficial for both.

    1. If you want to get into Techcrunch you MUST give them equal shot at going out first. 

    They like exclusives, though, and might even negotiate with you for such. One entrepreneur I know was told "give us an exclusive and we'll give you two posts." They kill stories if they aren't in the first group to go out.

    2. It doesn't matter

    Flipboard didn't get covered by Techcrunch (if you get me drunk I might tell you the backstory about that one) but they went on to be named app of the year by Apple anyway.

    3. My friends who work in PR and who have tested this say you'll get your best PR if you get written about at least four blogs, who all go out together. 

    That requires embargoing people (and being clear about it). Even though you might have everyone embargoed it might still leak, which will kill your Techcrunch chances. That's happened before for various reasons.

    4 (really should be #1) have something interesting. 

     When Word Lens hit email last week (me and Techcrunch were on the same email) Techcrunch wrote about it in literally two minutes. Why? It was interesting tech.

    5. Read all the other advice on this thread: 

     Social Media: What are some tips for getting your startup featured on TechCrunch, Mashable, and other tech blogs?. It's good and I won't repeat it.

    6. Get someone we all trust to verify your greatness. 

     A minute after the Word Lens email came in another email from someone I trust came in that said "OMG, this is so cool." That made sure I tweeted it, and kept tweeting about it, etc.

    7. Do a blog post of your own explaining the technology. 

     That gives everyone something to link to and often that'll get on Techmeme too. See Occipital's blog about its 360 Panoramic iPhone app for a good example: http://occipital.com/blog/

    8. Have a Twitter account.  

    Make sure you tweet some interesting things beforehand (Flipboard just did "flip, flip, flip" and made fun that they were working hard on something, but then they switched into retweeting the best coverage, and answering questions, etc). Make sure you have a link to your product site. Make sure you have an avatar, etc.

    9. Do a YouTube video where you demo your product. 

    That always helps a second wave of Twittering happen as people discover your product. Word Lens' video has been watched millions of times now in just the first week. 

    10. Build relationships with the press BEFORE you need them. 

    There's no magic to this, but helping journalists out with stories, guest posts, and leaks and stuff beforehand helps you build a relationship that you can then use when you launch your own company.

    11. Give your company/product TIME to have a story built around it. 

    Siri showed me their product SIX MONTHS before release. Soluto? Two months. Flipboard? Three months. Instagram? Two months. Why? Because showing your product around helps you perfect the pitch, but it also helps make a better product. Last night Beluga shipped. It doesn't run on my iPhone. So I spit on their product in public. I had to. It doesn't work. They could have fixed that by showing it to folks a week ago. But they didn't. It isn't lost on me that the best companies show their products around early before launch. Even Word Lens told me they showed dozens of people the product, they just didn't let them take videos. That helps build demand that explodes on launch day.
